Welcome to the Cambodian Trial Monitoring Database (the "Database"). The Database is an output of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights' (the "CCHR") Trial Monitoring Project. CCHR is a leading non-aligned, independent, non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect democracy and respect for human rights. The Trial Monitoring Project, which was introduced in August 2009, monitors criminal trials in Cambodia so as to assess their adherence to Cambodian and international fair trial standards. It then uses these findings in its efforts to bring about increased respect for fair trial rights.

To date, criminal trials at the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court of First Instance; the Kandal Provincial Court of First Instance; the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of First Instance; and the Rattanakiri Provincial Court of First Instance; and the Court of Appeal, have been monitored. The main activities of the Trial Monitoring Project include the monitoring of criminal trials by CCHR Trial Monitors using specific checklists; the production of bi-annual and annual reports which draw together and analyze the recorded data from the preceding reporting period; and the entering into dialogue with members of the judiciary and key stakeholders in order to share information and ideas, and improve adherence to international and Cambodian fair trial standards.

In its bid to bring about more transparency in the Cambodian judicial system, the Trial Monitoring Project has launched the Database which records and organizes the data collected from the above-mentioned courts. The Database will also publish the work of Trial Monitoring Project, such as its press releases and bi-annual reports. In this way, the public will have free and open access to the data collected by the CCHR Trial Monitors.
