This month, October 2023, to mark World Habitat Day 2023, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) releases a fact sheet on forced evictions in Cambodia since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in late 2021. This fact sheet builds upon a previous fact sheets released by CCHR in 2020 and 2021. It recalls the human rights obligations requiring both States and businesses to protect citizens against the gross human rights violation that constitutes forced eviction. It also provides tangible recommendations to the Royal Government of Cambodia to cease forced evictions, preserve its citizens’ housing, and improve respect for land rights and fundamental freedoms in the Kingdom.
On the occasion of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 2023, CCHR releases an update on access to collective land titles (CLTs) for indigenous communities in Cambodia, and also highlights one of their main concerns.

A Briefing Note on Business and Human Rights entitled “Preventing, Mitigating and Remedying Land-Related Rights Violations in the Kingdom of Cambodia: Seven Areas for Improvement” is released today on 20 December 2018. The Briefing Note aims to identify key issues pertaining to business and human rights in the Kingdom of Cambodia through the analysis of three land-related conflicts, and to propose recommendations in order to prevent, and remedy related human rights violations caused by business operations. It identifies seven areas of concern which are at the core of land-related disputes in Cambodia.
CCHR worked with 16 other Civil Society Organizations (“CSOs”) to publish a joint-statement entitled “Land Rights as Human Rights” on 10 December 2018. After the regional workshop on Engaging National Human Rights Institutions Toward the Recognition of Land Rights as Human Rights’ on 15-16 November 2018 at Bangkok, Thailand.

Snapshot: Over the past decade, Special Economic Zones (‘SEZ’) have flourished in Cambodia and around the region. While the advantages they can bring in terms of economic development and trade are not to be neglected, the development and operations of SEZs are often intrinsically linked with human rights violations such as land-grabs, poor labour conditions or environmental damage. This Fact Sheet highlights the rules underlying the establishment and supervision of SEZs, outlines the most common associated human rights concerns, and provides concrete recommendations to ensure that economic development goes hand in hand with respect of fundamental rights and freedoms
