Civil Society Calls for Immediate Release of Boeung Kak Lake Activists
We, the undersigned civil society groups, demand the immediate release of two Boeung Kak Lake activists – Ms. Tep Vanny and Ms. Bov Sophea – who were charged and sent to provisional detention in Prey Sar’s CC2 prison on 17 August 2016, in relation to their involvement in the ‘Black Monday’ campaign. We also call on authorities to drop the spurious incitement charges against them, and allow for peaceful assemblies, such as those in support of the Black Monday campaign, as protected under Cambodian and international law.

CAMBODIA: Release detained human rights defenders and stop their harassment
Paris-Geneva, July 21, 2016 - The Cambodian Government must immediately release five prominent human rights defenders who are currently arbitrarily detained based on trumped-up charges that stem solely from their human rights activities, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (an FIDH-OMCT partnership) said today. The call was made following a three-day mission conducted by the Observatory in Phnom Penh. The Observatory also calls on the authorities to end threats, intimidation, and harassment against human rights defenders in the country.

UN Human Rights Council Puts Cambodia on Notice
(Geneva, 4 July 2016) – The 32nd session of the UN Human Rights Council which concluded its debates on Friday, 1 July 2016, saw several states speak out against the narrowing space for civil society and dissent in Cambodia. On Thursday, Japan, France, United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union expressed concern at the recent escalation of attacks on civil society and the political opposition.

We, the undersigned civil society organizations (“CSOs”) condemn the decision made yesterday – 28 June 2016 – by the Appeal Court to find guilty for a second time Boeng Kak land rights activist Yorm Bopha, following a retrial in relation to an alleged attack on two motorbike taxi drivers in 2012. Yorm Bopha was given a three-year prison sentence, which will take into account the fourteen months and eighteen days she has already spent in prison, with the remainder of her sentence suspended.

Legal Analysis of the Prosecution of Four Mother Nature Activists
On 17 August 2015, Mr. San Mala, Mr. Try Sovikea and Mr. Sim Somnang (the “detained charged persons”) were arrested and charged under Article 424 of the Criminal Code of the Kingdom of Cambodia (the “Penal Code”) with threatening to destroy property followed by an order. They have been detained since their arrest in Koh Kong’s provincial prison. On 05 February 2016, it became public that Mr. Alejandro Gonzalez-Davidson had been charged under Article 29 of the Penal Code with being an accomplice to the same offense.
